In Einzelportraits, Generationengesprächen und Gruppendiskussionen erprobt Let’s Talk About Race unterschiedliche Zugänge zum Thema Rassismus und beleuchtet, wie BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Color) einen von Vorurteilen und Zuschreibungen geprägten Alltag in einer weissen Mehrheitsgesellschaft erleben und verhandeln. Das filmische Projekt stellt sich somit gegen die Annahme, dass rassistische Strukturen und Anschauungen heutzutage längst überwunden sind, und versucht zur Sprache zu bringen, was im öff entlichen Diskurs über Rassismus unter der Oberfl äche bleibt.
Let’s Talk About Race ist kein klassischer Dokumentarfilm. Die Arbeit von Arathy Pathmanathan wurde ursprünglich als Ausstellung konzipiert. Beim Black Film Festival Zurich wird ihr Film zum ersten Mal im Kontext des Kinos gezeigt.
Let’s Talk About Race explores different approaches to speaking about racism through individual portraits, generational conversations and group discussions. It sheds light on how BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Colour) experience and negotiate an everyday life that is shaped by prejudice and attributions in a predominately white society. The project challenges the assumption that racist structures and views have long been overcome, and attempts to verbalise what has remained under the surface in public discussions about racism.
Let's Talk About Race is not a classic documentary. Arathy Pathmanathan's work was originally conceived as an exhibition. At the Black Film Festival Zurich, her film will be shown for the first time in the context of cinema.
